Grief, Observed Further by ~batousaijin:iconbatousaijin:

Trunk nuzzles unmoving trunk,
Ear, foot, tail,
And receives no reciprocation.
An elephant mother, bereft
Of her calf, is inconsolable,
And I know that her grief
Is not borne of instinct or
Darwinian necessity.

“Like a patient etherised upon a table.”
Eliot and Prufrock
Don’t do justice to a mother
Watching her child being put to sleep.
Morpheus creeps his way into vein,
And eyes close instantly, no countdown,
Breath and heart reduced to ant whispers.
Pretty, plastic box slides into incinerator—
Magnetic Resonance Imager—
And hours later, baby Lazarus
Returns to mother.
Though she knows death won’t last,
She grieves for her child,
And I know that her grief is as real
As an elephant mother’s.

Author's Comments

A sequel to my first "Grief Observed" poem. Preview image is Masaccio's "Adam and Eve" in the Brancacci Chapel. In "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock," Eliot describes the "eve ... spread out against the sky / Like a patient etherised upon a table."

I loved it. Not only is the wording and imagery beautiful- it's understandable, and I identify with the message.

Great work.

Stunningly beautiful and resoundingly truthful. Excellent work.

This is a late parrot. It's a stiff. Bereft of life, it rests in peace. If you hadn't nailed it to the perch, it would be pushing up the daisies. It's rung down the curtain and joined the choir invisible. THIS IS AN EX-PARROT.

I finally figured out what you were writing (It was rather inspiring to see you find those words.. I love to see a poet/writer in action :)

I may not be a mother, and I may not know as much grief comes with such an action as happened upon your son. but your words tell the full story, reaching out to any soul willing to listen.

"Don’t do justice to a mother
Watching her child being put to sleep." I have seen my little sister go through this as well, and I watch my mothers reaction, and you nailed it, you put imagery to that very grief!
